Definition of Cerebral Palsy? Cause , Classification , Management, Prevention.

Definition Of Cerebral palsy(CP): 

Abnormal control of motor movement due to a nonprogressive lesion of the immature brain.

Cause/ Etiology: 

  •  Uknown 70%
  • Prematurity
  • Perinatal Asphyxia
  • Birth Trauma.
  • Meningoencephalitis.
  • Metabolic Hypoglycemia
  • Congenital Malformation of the brain.

Classification:

  • Clinical Type: 3

  1. Spastic - Tightness of muscle.
  2. Athetoid- Uncontrolled Of body Movement.
  3. Ataxic - Poor Balance.
  • Based on Severity:
  1. Mild- Ambulatory
  2. Moderator- Treated at Outpatient level.
  3. Severe- Bed Ridden
Clinical Features:
  1. Decrease spontaneous Mobility.
  2. Abnormal Movement.
  3. Constant fisting after 2 months of age.
  4. Primitive reflexes persisting beyond 6 months.
  5. Reduce head circumference.
  6. Delay social Smile.
  7. Delay milestone of development.
  8. Persistent asymmetry in posture, movement & reflexes.
  9. Excessive extensor tone.
  10. Nystagmus, persistent squint, no visual flowing.
  11. Lack of auditory response.
  12. Speech problem.
  13. Behavior problem, mental retardation, seizures.

Treatment:
  1. Physiotherapy.
  2. Occupational Therapy.
  3. Speech Therapy.
  4. Education Therapy.
  5. Social Therapy.
  6. Rehabilitation.
  7. Parental counseling.
Prevention: By better obstetric and neonatal care.
